A Brief Overview of Groundworks for Construction

The team here at G M Groundworks Ltd consists of a number of trades, all of whom are needed during projects carrying out groundworks in Telford and beyond. But what does groundworks entail, and what skills are needed at each stage? Here, we give a broad overview of what happens during the groundworks phase of construction. Of course, every project is different, but in general terms, the process is as follows.

Groundworks for Construction Shropshire and West Midlands

Main Stages During Groundworks

First, groundworks in general covers the work that’s carried out in the initial stages of a new construction project to prepare the ground and sub-surfaces for building. Some sites may need demolition of any existing unwanted structures, but after this, the next stage is site clearance. This removes all debris that may interfere with the project, which will be disposed of safely and responsibly. Old materials are recycled or reused where possible, with the rest going to landfill.

Next, earthworks take place. This consists of removing the topsoil from the footprint of the structure to a depth of between 5cm and 20cm, to reach the first densely-packed layer of soil. The reason for this is to remove as much organic matter, mineral particles, water and air from the building’s footprint as possible, as these all may affect the future stability of the building.

If the site is on a slope, further work may be needed to level it out. This might include a requirement to construct retaining walls, to hold back earth that’s been removed and further level off the site itself. Retaining walls may also be required in the next stage, which is the creation of the substructure. This is done by excavating earth to create the foundations of the building and any basement that might be in the plans. Retaining walls can be created through concrete works, from stone, timber or brick/ blockwork.

At this stage, drainage is laid, along with the necessary pipework and cabling to add services like gas, water and electricity.

Once work to the substructure has been completed and building upwards can begin, groundworkers typically take a step back and return at the end of the project or move on at this stage to landscaping the rest of the site.

Landscaping and Civil Engineering

No development is complete without amenities and access to the outside world, creating the need for infrastructure such as roads and car parks, which all need surfacing. As part of the project, footway and highway construction may be needed and groundworkers will also lay paving and kerbing. Further earthworks may be needed to remodel the site and soft landscaping, such as planting trees and bushes, may also be part of the groundworkers’ remit.

Here at G N Groundworks Ltd, we have a team of over 60 site operatives, many skilled in particular aspects of groundworks and housing infrastructure. If you are planning a development in the West Midlands area, or in Cheshire or Derbyshire, and require groundworks or civil engineering, we would be pleased to discuss working with you. Call today.
